My name is Sawyer Stone and I am a 2D/3D animator/illustrator.
I’ve been a storyteller at heart for as long as I can remember, as well as a visual thinker. I wanted to tell stories, and in my mind I saw them as movies: Fantasy creatures and characters, entire worlds, things that could only exist on screen in animation. I dreamt of getting these stories out of my head and onto the screen where I could share them, where I could take people on these adventures with me.
But there was a gap between my goals and my abilities. At first all I knew how to do was write, so at 15 I decided my first step was to at least flesh out the story I would eventually turn into a film. I developed a concept for a fantasy novel, The Alsima Chronicles, which would serve as the basis of inspiration for much of my work.
Three years later I started an animation program at JCCC in the fall of 2014 as the first step on my road to reaching the desired level of skill to do more with my story than write it. Over time I learned that after having gone through their tenure most students will have chosen a specific field for their career path, and although since my graduation in spring of 2018 I’ve been hard set on using the skills I’ve learned to find a solid job in an industry for the short term, my larger vision during my tenure was more entrepreneurial in nature. Most students who become generalists usually do so because they have no idea what they want to do. I am a generalist because I know exactly what I want to do, and I want to do everything. If I limit my skills, I limit my vision, and how much of that vision I can transfer from my mind to the screen.
My goal is to contribute to a functional piece of an industry pipeline, and to never stop expanding my skills and know every skill set it will take to turn the vision of The Alsima Chronicles into an animated film series.
